In a move that signals the accelerating pace of change in the tech industry, Microsoft has announced the layoff of 9,000 employees worldwide, representing nearly 4% of its workforce, as it intensifies investment in artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
The layoffs were confirmed on July 2, 2025, and span departments including Xbox gaming, Azure sales, support engineering, and operations. This is Microsoft’s second major workforce reduction this year, following a 6,000-person layoff in Q1.
📍 India’s Role in the Restructuring
While the majority of cuts are expected in North America and Europe, sources within Microsoft India confirm that some support and QA teams in Hyderabad and Bengaluru have also been affected, particularly in non-core roles.
However, Microsoft India has stated it remains committed to its AI Center of Excellence and will continue to hire in strategic AI and data-focused roles.
